This banner embraces the efforts that were put forth prior to the evolution of historic preservation. The Woodstock Preservation Alliance is the banner which the Preservationists stood under throughout their efforts for the historic preservation of the Woodstock Site. The "Dove Behind the Fence" was a signature logo used by the Woodstock Preservationists to raise awareness and the chain-link fence is symbolic of the fact that the privilege to walk freely on the Woodstock Site, is no longer allowed.

“Hundreds of Acres to Roam On” -  That was the catchphrase in the original Woodstock advertisement.  It’s our hope that we have provided, exactly that, for you through our web pages. Our objective, for this website, is that everyone who visits, leave with a “little something” -  maybe a sparked interest, a rekindled memory, or an assurance in knowing that ordinary people can make a difference. It is our way of preserving the legacy of “Woodstock.”

I was born in 1961 in Auztralia so I never made it to Woodstock. It would have heaven to me,as I'm listening to Jefferson Airplane now I would have loved to hear their "Morning maniac music" The revolution aint over yet.Love and peace (still) May love and peace be within you and around you always and the stars of freedom shine forever in your mind.

Hello and Happy New Year from the City by the Bay, San Fran!
Recently I met Wavy Gravy in the course of my work.  What a wonderful
and free spirit and what a treat to meet someone who has given back
to the world more than he has taken.  "...breakfast in bed for
300,000..."

When I asked my Mom if I could go to Woodstock she said yes.  I was
thrilled and a little surprised.  'Thing is, I had no money at 15
yrs. old, so I told her that my good friend Nick and I were going to
hitchhike.  She went ballistic.
'Short version, I watched the concert when it came to the local drive
in theater a couple years later.  Bummer.
Silly me...I'd probably have taken the brown acid . . .

This website was immensely helpful in assisting me in writing a speech about
the culture of Woodstock. I emailed Joanne about contacting some of the
Woodstock Historians about information and she responded to me that night! I
sent a list of interview questions and many of the Historians responded
within a couple of days. Their insight and stories were abundantly helpful
and I got an awesome grade on my speech and I know that it would not have
been even half as good without their help. Thank you all so much! I loved
hearing about all of your individual experiences and views. Your insights
have changed the way I look at the Festival itself as well as what was
obviously a very special time in America's history.

Thank you again!
Claire

II would have been in the middle of that multitude but a couple of days before we were to leave my band caught a gig at a festival in the midwest. If I had known it would be the epitome of all outdoor rock festivals, I would have gone anyway. God, I miss the 60's!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course you can use my name - who knows, maybe another old fart rock'n'roller will remember me.  An interesting side note - a few years ago I ran into someone who had been at Woodstock and she was wondering if the 2 hits of Owsley she kept as a souvenir would be any good after all that time.  I never did find out ------?
Peace!

Date: 9/9/2007 11:09:28 AM Eastern Daylight Time

HI   id just like to say what a brilliant site

although i wasnt born till 1969 i got caught in the 60's revival back here
in the uk in 1979-1987

and just love the flower power era and artists alike

i often wondered what i would have been like to have been to such a life
changing concert as woodstock, or monterey etc   but the closest i got was
going to glastonbury in 1997 when it absolutely poured down but the
companionship ,the free love and blue haze continued unabated it was then
that i could only imagine what it was like and loved evry minute of it
keep up the good work

yours under the stars

Although I’m in California now, not NY, and haven’t been back to Bethel since the 1999 reunion, I’m still very interested.  I hope the new plan for development doesn’t overwhelm the historical and spiritual significance of the site.

Thanks for giving me some news and being a voice in Bethel.

Fantastic site. Keep up the good work, a site like this (the grassy one
not the cyber-one, although that is worthy too) must be preserved. It's
important for more than one generation.

Hello,Thank you for all of your efforts to preserve the Woodstock site.I've seen what they've constructed there and it goes against everything woodstock stood for.Greed knows no boundries especially in this age of cynicism.I'm reminded of Joni Mitchel's words "They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum;and charged the people a dollar and a half just to see them;Dont it always seem to go that you dont know what you've got till its gone; They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot".

PEACE,Dan.

My friends were there in 69. I always regretted not going, and kept the spirit inside me. I finally went in 89 and in 2008. While I think it's good that the Hill is preserved and not filled with condos, and there is a museum at the top, it's not right that you can't go on the field.

young adults today should be able to share this experience really feel what it is like to live in "our so called free world" backthen we were free now its all politics government debts and what movie star is donating what to whom

Subject: BW Center

Date:  12/01/2008  3:00:42 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time

I recieved an e-mail from the Bethel Woods Center about becoming a "Friend" of the center. The cheapest is 75 bucks. I called the center and asked if I bought a "Friends" membership, would I be able to walk into the original site field just to get a feel for where I sat and watched the concerts in '69 and of course the answer was NO!  I talked to a woman named Laurie who works in the dept. that took care of those memberships. She was very nice and helpful and said she would mention my request at their next meetings. Imagine that!....having to "pay" to walk on that field! I will be contacting the Director of the Center to see if we can do something about this.

All I'm talking about is a few moments to walk close to that spot on the site, take a couple pics, have a few flashbacks, and leave without a trace!  JEEZE!...I guess I'm just a "terrorist". A "terrorist-hippie"!!! I even promised not to bring a tent. Ya know, in alot of ways...nothing has changed in America! And yet everything has changed! We're just in a different "reality" level! Reading Plato's "Republic" explains alot of how the "culture" works. Thats basically the "society" we all live in...the BEEHIVE! Every BEE-ing in his or her place! OH BEE-HIVE!....behave and stay in your "politically-correct" box! The ex-teacher, John Gatto in his books, "The Underground History of American Education" and "Weapons of Mass Instruction" explain how Plato's "SYSTEM" works. Check-out John's web-site for his work; www. johntaylorgatto. com. The REAL function of pedagogy is to train generations into subservient obedience to the State! A LA Plato's "Republic"!  Sciencetific Management via Frederick Taylor and B. F. Skinner and the like. This stuff is ANCIENT! "They blinded me with science".....remember Thomas Dolby's song from the 80's. Boy! And what was Pink Floyd's "The Wall" telling us? "Hey teacher....leave those kids alone.......we don't need no THOUGHT-CONTROL! WOW!

Anyway, Joann, I'm sure that you are not surprised by the Centers policies. "Facsist-Pigs"!!!!

Sincerely
Scott A. Munroe

To those that may have posted less than enthusiastic or indifferent comments about the “specialness” of the Woodstock site……………….I say to you, you just don’t  “get it”.  If you don’t understand the “spirit” of Woodstock……………….you never will…………..and it can never be explained to you.   Fortunately that “spirit” does live on, and will never die.  It wasn’t “just a concert”. It was a spiritual experience that should have sent a message to mankind…………… that human beings have the potential to do better than they have over the centuries. To me, the spirit of Woodstock was a brief glimmer of what this world could be…………..but sadly, is not.

Great site. Good job !!

If there is any way that further development can be stopped and the area can remain, as much as possible, the way it was in 1969; I would contribute my efforts in any way possible. We changed the world forever, and there should be a way for the coming generations to stand in the midst of the place that embodies the universal change we made and feel the winds of change for the future sweep over them.

This site is spectacular and however I was only six in 1969 however a few years later when I understood the events of the time I thank all that attended and all that have preserved everything. If something of that magnatude could only happen again in this day and age this country and the world would be a far better place, I can only pray it happens and PEACE and LOVE  are the outcome.
